A Senior Mission Designer at Gearbox is a development role focused on creating missions and narrative activities that breathe life into the stories we tell. This position is for candidates with a track record of shipping missions, level scripting, or narrative design work on AAA games or premium mobile titles. A Senior Mission Designer is responsible for owning the player’s moment-to-moment experience when exploring the worlds we build. Candidates should have strong visual scripting skills, working knowledge of basic level design skills, and a strong feel for storytelling. This project is being built in Unreal Engine 5, so we encourage candidates to have familiarity with that toolset, and ideally some shipped experience with Unreal. Job duties will include pitching missions, working with the writing team to develop narrative moments, scripting narrative events, and owning the technical implementation of all mission objectives.
This role will work with a small world building group involving other level designers, level artists, mission designers, and lighting artists to holistically bring life to the worlds our players explore. All Mission Designers report to a Lead Mission Designer on their project and will receive additional mentorship and training from other more experienced Mission and Level Designers. This role requires a familiarity with visual scripting, Borderlands-style FPS missions, as well as mission and activity design from a wide variety of game genres. Successful candidates will show a passion for interconnecting narrative and gameplay, strong communication skills, and the ability to work in teams.
