At Gearbox, we love to build fun game worlds for our players, where players can have interesting and memorable gameplay encounters. While some games may feature a handful of enemy classes, we challenge ourselves to build whole armies of interesting enemies, variants, and bosses that can be combined and remixed into nearly infinite combinations of gameplay. Our Enemy Design team is looking for some new members to join it as we build the net generation of Borderlands games, as well as many exciting new unannounced projects. Enemy Designers at Gearbox start with paper design and then collaborate with art, animation, fx, audio, narrative, level design, and more to  bring their ideas to life. Designers who are used to building systemic content and working with multidisciplinary teams tend to thrive in this role. We use internally developed tools built in Unreal Engine, so we look for a portfolio that shows solid game design skills, relevant FPS or 3D action game experience, and a passion for building fun and unique experiences for players.



  • Design, build, and iterate enemies and other AI content for a multi-platform AAA FPS
  • Work with the Lead Enemy Designer and Creative Director to make sure enemies, factions, bosses and NPCs are meeting their goals and delivered to players in a complete, polished, and fun state
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams with art, animation, audio, level design, mission design, and code to build cohesive, fun, and optimized enemy content
  • Ability to break down requests from other departments into standardized systems and implementations
  • Take a keen interest in team morale, and the growth of other team members’ craft. This may include mentoring entry level hires.
  • Document processes and key information regarding your creatures for QA test guides.
  • Work on multiple things at once at varying stages of development



  • A portfolio that shows your contribution to one or more AAA Projects shipped to completion in a design role, preferably building systemic content
  • Familiarity with modern FPS games and enemy mechanics
  • Love of the Borderlands franchise

Bonus Points:

  • Shipped products using Unreal Engine 4 or 5 
  • Leadership experience
  • Open world AI/Combat experience
